TOURNAMENTS

Matt Roth and myself accepting plaques and a check for our second team tournament win.  Matt fished as my alternate as John wasn't able to be there.  We fished Owyhee Reservoir, which lies south of Nyssa, Oregon.  The scenery is awesome and the fish cooperated for us although we didn't catch any BIG fish.  Most of your fish came on twin-tailed grubs and crankbaits.

John McCarthy and myself accepting our plaques and a check for our third team tournament win of the year.  We fished the scenic Hells Canyon Reservoir and found the fish to be less than cooperative.  We managed to catch a couple of decent fish on twin tailed grubs and an Eakin's jig.  We primarily worked a section of bank below the Oxbow dam as there was little current being generated.  That area contained some of the strongest current as well as some of the most active fish.  It was a beautiful day to be on the water.

Matt Roth accepting a nice plaque and check from Terry Petty of Western Marine.  Matt finished in 2nd place in the Superior Bass Fishing Association / AAA (amatuer) Division.  This is his first year fishing this format.  His sponsor, "George's Custom Rods", was very proud of his efforts and accomplishments!

These are couple of the largemouth bass I caught in the 2002 Idaho BASS Southern Region, Federation Qualifier on Lake Lowell. The 5-fish limit totaled 10.03# and was good enough to take first place on a blustery day. These fish were caught using a Carolina rig and dragging a twin-tailed hula grub behind a 3/4 oz. Lindy weight. My rod was a GLoomis MB845-GL3, split rear grip (helps you grip the rod when casting heavy baits) and Fuji New Concept Alconite guides, applied in a spiral wrap. The line I used is the new McCoy 30# braid, leader of McCoy 12# co-polymer line, spooled on a Shimano Curado 201B. The combination of the McCoy Spectra Superline and sensitive GLoomis rod, gave me the advantage to feel the subtle bites that others missed in those adverse conditions.

This is the GLoomis MB845-GL3 I have used for my Carolina rig fishing, as mentioned above. This rod is no longer available as a blank. St. Croix produces a Legend Elite 5C70MHF that has a very similar action, more sensitive and the completed rod is lighter than the GLoomis.  Another awesome C-rig rod is the Shikari SHII FS 764.  This rod is intended for flipping, but the Moderate action / M-Hvy power allows you to make tremendous casts using 3/4-1 oz. weights.  It is surprisingly light for such a long rod, contains plenty of beef in the butt section, it is sensitive and the added length allows you to move more line as you sweep the rod on the hookset.  It is certainly worth a test cast...or twenty!

George with a 3.88# smallmouth bass. It was caught on a 6'6" Graphite USA B65LXF spinning rod, while drop-shotting. I was using a SnakeBite 4" finesse worm in watermelon / seed to entice the strike.
